There's a Food Called Cocomocorn (That's Where You Wanna Go to Get Away From It All)

Beach Boys reference, anyone? Ever since I went to Jamaica, the song "Kokomo" has a lot more meaning for me—and this Cocomocorn from Cocomo Joe? Well, it reminds me of the song, both because the words sound the same and because there's a lot of coconut involved. Like, a lot. So, Koko...Coco...no matter the spelling, let's get this tropical review party started. If you couldn't tell by the name, Cocomocorn is in fact popcorn (hence the "corn"), but it's popped and mixed with coconut oil, coconut nectar and coconut sugar (hence the "coco") for flavor. And flavor it has. With 160 calories in a single-serving 1-ounce bag, the result is a sweet caramel treat that has just a touch of coconuttiness (yep, that's a new word!) to it. Gluten-free and with a lower-glycemic index than you'd expect for such a sweet treat, each serving also has 4 grams of fat, 11 grams of sugar, 2 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber. Not too shabby for a sweet treat! (And I highly recommend sneaking this into the movies...) In addition to Cocomocorn, I also tried Cocomo Joe's Chocolate Milk Granola and the Joebar. And if Cocomocorn had just a hint of coconut, these are a step further in the coconutty direction. The granola is chocolatey, sweet and delicious with almond or coconut (double hit of coconut!) milk poured over it, and the Joebar is a dense and filling snack or meal replacement chock full of shredded coconut. With about 250 calories for a three-quarters cup of granola and 330 calories for a Joebar, these are higher in the calorie-count department. However, much like these that we recently reviewed, they are FULL of good stuff like coconut (of course), nuts and dried fruits. Some of the Joebars, albeit a little crumbly, are even Paleo-friendly! So if you love coconut, have a soft spot in your heart for the Beach Boys and are looking for a healthy filling snack, these might be for you! Now sing it with us now, "Aruba, Jamaica, oooh I wanna take you..." —Jenn
